What is calisthenics?
From the Greek words ‘kallos’ meaning 'beauty', and ‘thenos’ meaning 'strength', calisthenics is a uniquely Australian sport that combines dance, gymnastics, ballet, aerobics, theatre and apparatus work. Watch this video compilation to see calisthenics in action!
Calisthenics is both a sport and art. As a sport it encourages physical development, coordination, self-discipline and team spirit. As an art it develops an appreciation of music and rhythm, the beauty of line and the excitement of performing on stage.
What are the benefits of calisthenics?
Calisthenics is the perfect sport for those who want to do everything!
The variety of dance genres performed in our weekly lessons gives students the opportunity to develop both strength and flexibility, whilst performing a variety of routines reflecting classical ballet, gymnastics, modern dance, singing and acting.
The variety keeps lessons fresh, engaging, and enjoyable, while also saving families the hassle of attending several separate classes each week.
What is involved in each lesson?
Our weekly team lessons at Del Sante Gardens give students the chance to develop skills in 3-6 routines (depending on age), each of a different genre.
Every routine is approximately 3 minutes in duration and is choreographed to music. In addition to team work, participants can learn and compete in solo and duo items if they choose.
Which genres will my child learn?
The number of routines and the genres your child will learn throughout the year vary on the age group.
Some genres are considered 'core' items and are performed each year, while others are considered 'fancy' items are on a rotational basis between age groups.
'Fancy' items include: Song & Action, Cali Review, Calisthenic Spectacular or Dance Arrangement

Do I need to know how to sew or sequin for my child to participate?
You definitely don't need to know how to sew or sequin! Del Sante Gardens have a huge range of ready-made costumes that our members hire from the club to save parents the hassle!
Each year, a new 'fancy' costume is made or purchased for your child, that you get to keep at the end of the year. Often, the 'fancy' costumes come to you complete with all of the bling attached.
If the costume happens to need embelishing or bedazzling, we can teach you how to glue the gems on (sequins are rarely used nowadays!) or, if you prefer to outsource, many of our wonderful families will be happy to do it for you.
